Laminate Furniture

Laminate is Popularly known as sun mica, laminate furniture is not actually made of wood. It is made by pressing together multiple layers of plastic resins and flat paper. A printed process is used to give it a wood grain appearance. Often, the upper layer is printed with decorative pattern or colours, and given a shiny finish, thereby giving it a manufactured look. Therefore, when it comes to creating furniture for busy areas such as the kitchen, people often prefer laminate over other material.

First you all need to make sure your laminate is in good condition. By removing the outer surface will not be fixed by painting. Then clean your cabinets really well. Especially in the kitchen, cabinets can coast all sorts of greasy grime that will prevent even the best paint from sticking. Just spray it on and wipe it off with a damp rag, taking care to get into all the narrow opening between surfaces.

roller paint brush

You need a paint roller, tray and a soft paint brush for painting. Leave your cabinet doors attached and roll on your first layer of paint on the face of the doors and drawers. Then use a soft paint brush to get into all the areas the roller couldn’t reach, like the insets in the doors. If your doors have knobs or pulls, remove them and keep them in a small plastic bag for reattaching later.

Steps To Paint Laminate Furniture

Painting laminate furniture is not difficult provided you use quality materials and follow the steps but it can take a while due to the drying times between coats, so only do it when you have the time and space to devote to it. So follow this steps for painting laminate furniture. As we explained very clearly how to paint you can go through it.

Step 1: Clean Before Painting

Wipe down all surfaces to be painted with white spirit using a lint free cloth. The must important thing you should do before painting with white spirit is you must wear gloves. This step is important because new furniture may have a thin film of oil to aid the manufacturing/packaging process. And oil is no good if you want paint to stick to your surface.

Step 2: Prime The Furniture

Prime The Furniture

Roll on 2 coats of a shellac based primer.  Using a good primer is essential. Don’t skimp on the primer hence buy the good stuff. I found rolling a very quick process and the finish was free of mark made across the surface. I used a good quality mini rollers for the project and disposed them after use. Alternatively you can use spray version of the primer. Whether you use roll, brush or spray be careful to paint in thin coats or the primer will drag.

Step 3: Paint With Fine Liquid Of Choice

Paint With Fine Liquid Of Choice

Roll on 2 coats of your chosen emulsion paint. Know a days everyone generally preferring eggshell for furniture. in which case you can skip step 4 but if you have a matte emulsion lying around you can use this too. Here we used Little Greene French Grey Dark 163. This is our opinion as it is the loveliest mid-toned warm grey paint. Touch yourself on the back for choosing a wonderful color.

Step 4: Vanish

If you used a matte emulsion in step 3 then always finish with a coat or two of quality varnish for durability. I rolled 2 coats of Poly vine Decorators Varnish in Satin finish. When you follow this step 4 your furniture will get some shine. Most of them do vanish for shining the furniture. Hence by vanishing the furniture the furniture gets new look.

Step 5: Wait For Output

Wait for the eggshell or varnish to cure and harden. Leave the painted surfaces alone for several days. The longer days you leave the better result you get. The finish feels really durable.
