Tools You’ll Need:
- Factory matched car paint
- Squeegees
- Pipettes or paintbrushes
- Nitrile gloves
- Wiping/blending cloth
- Microfiber towel
- Blending solution and sealant
STEP 1: Clean And Prep The Chipped Areas To Fix Paint Chips On Car
The first main important step to do is to clean and prepare the surface. All you need to do is, first wash the paint chips with the help of soap and water. Once you had finished washing paint chips, wipe the area with denatured alcohol or specially formulated car panel cleaner. This will help you to remove the residual wax or other contaminants that are present in your car. This will provide a clean surface for the paint to adhere to.
STEP 2: Apply The Touch Up Paint To Fix Paint Chips On Car
Next, you can add touch-up paint to fix paint chips on the car. All you need to do is apply matched automotive paint beside the chip using a brush from the touchup paint bottle. Make sure not to apply paint directly on the chip. So that when you level the paint across the chip it will naturally fall into the damaged area and be smooth and flush.
STEP 3: Level The Paint Into The Chip Or Scratch To Fix Paint Chips On Car
The third step is to level the car paint using an ultra brush or by lightly swiping the paint across the chip using the flat side of your finger. Make sure not to press down when swiping the paint over the chip as this cause the paint to be forced out of the chip. Use a light pressure to create a level fill as it works best.
Once it seems the paint is leveled flat across the chip, let it dry before attempting excess paint. Do not try to fill the chip above the surface level of the car’s original paint. The paint needs to be leveled flat to prevent pulling the paint from the chip when performing the final blending step of the process.
STEP 4: Blend Away Excess Paint And Seal The Chip Repair To Fix Paint Chips On Car
Finally, you will need to blend away the dried excess paint on the clearcoat surrounding the repaired area using a lint-free wiping cloth and blending solution. We recommend Sealact™ blending solution which acts as a sealant for the paint chip repair. Shake the Sealact™ bottle for 10 seconds to mix the solution. As the components in that solution separate quickly you must be consistently mixed to work properly. Open the cap and squeeze enough solution to moisten about a 1-inch section of the wiping cloth. Wipe around the dried paint on the car with the help of rapid back and forth motion.
Wait for 30-45 seconds, you will slowly observe and see the excess paint soften, dissolve and pull away from the car’s panel. If you apply too much pressure, you can pull paint from the chip. If it seems paint is grabbing the wiping cloth, add extra Sealact™ to keep the cloth lightly lubricated. Once the excess paint is removed from around the chip, clean the area with a microfiber towel. This will remove the mist which is present on the surface of the car.
